What is EPDM?
EPDM: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, is the raw material of EPDM rubber. It is a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and a small number of dienes. It has many advantages, such as heat aging resistance, weather aging resistance, ozone resistance, chemical medium resistance and waterproof performance. It is widely used in automobile parts, building waterproof, wire and cable, heat-resistant rubber hose and automobile sealing.
Why do automobile grommets generally use EPDM?
Rubber grommets are generally divided into natural rubber (NR), chloroprene rubber (CR), silicone rubber (TV) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM).
Natural rubber (NR)
● Advantages: Igood elasticity andt has mechanical strength, excellent bending flexibility, high tear strength and good cold resistance.
● Disadvantages: Aging resistance is not good, not resistant to oil and ozone, and flammable.
● Operating temperature range: -60～100℃.
Chloroprene rubber
Chloroprene rubber is commonly known as neoprene (CR)
● Advantages: good ozone resistance, heat aging resistance, oil resistance and other properties, with flame retardancy and self-extinguishing.
● Disadvantages: the low-temperature resistance is not good.
● Operating temperature range: -35～130℃
Silicone rubber (TV)
● Advantages: good heat resistance, cold resistance and weather resistance;
● Disadvantage: it is not oil resistant.
● Operating temperature range: -70～280℃
Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)
● Advantages: good weather resistance, ozone resistance, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and high strength and high expansion rate;
● Disadvantages: poor adhesion, less elasticity and poor oil resistance than natural rubber.
● Operating temperature range: -60～150℃
Comparatively speaking, the comprehensive performance of EPDM is better, so now the rubber parts for automobile harness are generally made of EPDM.
What can the rubber grommets do in a car?
When the wire harness passes through the holes and other objects, the rubber parts ensure the electrical parts will not be damaged and generally used for transition to play the role of waterproof, sealing, etc.
It is mainly distributed in the following parts:
● The interface between the engine and the cab
● The interface between the front compartment and the cab (two on the left and right)
● The interface between the four doors (or back door) and the carriage
● The inlet of the oil tank.
